SoundClouder of the Day | Annie Dressner | Find Me

Recalling the likes of Bright Eyes and Jenny Lewis, Annie Dressner’s poignant songs have a warmth and intimacy that makes you feel like you’ve known her for years.

Having recently moved from her home in New York City to the UK, Annie is currently raising money to release her next EP via a fan-funding campaign. Check out the amazing animated campaign video here.

We love the way she responds to comments on her songs, and leaves feedback for others. Great stuff, Annie!

Congratulations to Adele on her Oscar nomination for “Skyfall”! Here she is performing a stripped-down set at the Tiny Desk.

I may have already posted this NPR video here, but what the hey! It’s Adele, right?!

BLACK WEDNESDAY: Paranoid by Black Sabbath - Doom metal and black metal has seen its popularity rise in recent years, but where is the source?  When I listen to those bands on all those “best of year in metal” lists, what I hear is Black Sabbath.  The band that was roundly panned by critics in 1970 is four decades later considered one of a handful greatest metals bands ever and has influenced every genre of metal.  Black Sabbath is the source.

As one of the greats, Black Sabbath also sports an impressive catalog of great music.  War Pigs got a few votes as greatest metal song ever, and it is awesomely heavy and topical.  It is amazing how it still sounds relevant and fresh even now.  But there are plenty of others that could be in the running for greatest ever including Iron Man, Children of the Grave, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Sweet Leaf or Snow Blind.

However, my vote goes with Paranoid as not only the greatest Sabbath song, but one the greatest metal songs ever.  That opening riff is so iconic.  The groove rhythm is the foundation of practically every future metal song.  All the more impressive is this was a throwaway song to fill up the “War Pigs” album.  The album name was changed to Paranoid and the song was released as the lead single, becoming their only song to go top 10 on any chart until Psycho Man in 1998.
